        WPFW Management Report

WPFW persists with its work of recovery and renewal. We are challenged not to be simply reactive in setting strategy and vision, building a professional team and culture, and in allocating funds. We must creatively shepherd limited resources to the most productive uses with the aim of creating maximum value for the station’s stakeholders. As we assure that this 33-year-old organization has a long-range strategy that maintains its mission and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress, we are building a vigorous and sustainable business organization dedicated to community engagement, enrichment and education.

Finances:

As of April 13, 2010 WPFW had a bank balance of $75,615.82 with outstanding

checks totaling $38,811.64. The balance net outstanding checks was $36,804.18.

Single-day pledge drives take place on April 14, April 19 and April 27.

The Spring Drive will be conducted May 9- May 23.

People:

Bob Daughtry is well known to the WPFW family and to Pacifica, having served variously as music programmer, Chief Engineer, Operations Manager and WBAI General Manager. He is now our interim Program Director.

Ramon Grimaldi, a valued volunteer, with decades of experience in commercial radio and audio engineering, has accepted the roles of Technical Director and Chief Operator, and will assume full management and supervisory responsibilities for WPFW's technical operations.

Luke Stewart, a former WPFW intern and current music programmer, will be employed part time as the evening audio technician. Sidrach Franklin has taken on the position of Chief Audio Technician.

Programs :

The WPFW “Instant Recess” Initiative featuring 10 minute on-air weekday features begins May 3 with a press conference at the National Press Club and an outdoor launch event at Freedom Plaza.

Along with the introduction of new programming, WPFW is instituting assessment and training measures to improve the quality of all programs.

We continue to restore training as fundamental to what we are as a radio station.

Website :

A team of designers from Free Range Studios, a progressive company with offices in Washington, D.C. and in Berkeley, California is at work creating a brand-new WPFW website.

Infrastructure:

We have several projects coming up that affect our broadcast power in one fashion or another. Lead abatement and antenna tower repainting is one. Another project is the complete rewiring of the main transmitter building. We also continue to look for an appropriate back-up transmitter site with an existing antenna. We have made arrangements for the pickup, shipment and complete refurbishing of our Armstrong 20KW transmitter now in storage.

WMNF is loaning WPFW a 2KW (150 lb.) solid state Armstrong transmitter to use for an alternate broadcast site.

We thank Jim Bennett and Bill Brown for their help on this project.

Jon Almeleh, Otis Maclay, Ed Bukant and Dennis Wallace, WPFW's contracted transmitter engineer and Don Mussell, our RF consultant have been working with us to find solutions.

WPFW started broadcasting Radio Maria's subcarrier on the 67KHz subchannel during the last week of September, and subsequently on the 92KHz subchannel.
