Since 2001, Pacifica agreed to democratize by establishing elected Local Station Boards, with listener-representatives holding 18 of t 24 seats. With the new structure, listeners expected a new era of transparency and accountability in network and station operations, including decisions about programming.
This has not happened at KPFA! We must insist that the programming reflects what the listeners want. For example, what the listeners want is Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman in prime time—a change voted for, after extensive deliberation, by the Program Council and affirmed by the Local Station Board. This change was not implemented!
KPFA listeners want information and coverage of labor movement news and issues affecting their lives as working or retired people. KPFA devotes only a 25-minute weekly segment to labor, yet the Program Council recently imposed a year moratorium on weekly or special labor program proposals from the Labor Collective.
These are just two of many examples of the stifling of democracy at KPFA. To break the impasse and revitalize the station, we need a station board fully committed to listener democracy, transparency, and accountability. The upcoming Local Station Board election, to fill the nine listener seats up for rotation, is our chance to put such a board in place.
The new Alliance for a democratic KPFA slate brings together candidates with diverse backgrounds and skills but a shared commitment to the Pacifica Mission, to the vision and objectives of the SavePacifica movement that united listeners and staff from 1999.
Together, we can make sure KPFA returns to its mission and roots as a community radio station—the voice of the people! Vote for the Alliance for a democratic KPFA to send this message to Pacifica, once again.
