Dan Wang Candidate Statement

My name is Dan Wang, and I’m a candidate for the KPFK Local Station Board.

As fellow listener-sponsors, you all know how valuable KPFK is to us in the Southern California progressive community, but these are challenging times for the station. Corporate media has become increasingly consolidated and has marginalized legitimate viewpoints. At the same time people who choose to seek out independent media have more choices than ever including political blogs, online news sites, and two competing progressive public radio stations. I welcome all these voices, and I look forward to helping KPFK stay relevant and healthy in this increasingly competitive environment.

In my day job, I’m an computer network administrator. As an example of our diversity in programming, KPFK even has a show for us techies, Digital Village on Saturday mornings. On the board, I hope to be able to bring my skills and experience working with Information Technology and the Internet to assist KPFK with any and all technology issues, specifically by volunteering for the Technology Committee.

In my free time, I’m active in Democratic Clubs and other activist organizations in the South Bay area, and I currently serve as chapter coordinator of the Progressive Democrats of America in the 36th Congressional District. Outside of the South Bay, I’m active in the Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles, Asian and Pacific Americans for Progress, and I have volunteered as a technical expert for Study California Ballots, an organization dedicated to election justice.

I know that we all have our favorite issues and causes that we like to promote. For me, it’s energy policy and Peak Oil. At the same time, I always keep my eye on the big picture. KPFK is very much a Big Tent of the left. For all our disagreements, I see us all unified by core progressive principles of fairness, inclusiveness, and the shared fate of us all living on one small planet.
