Dave Welsh

"Endorsed by Pierre Labossiere, Carolyn Scarr, Clarence Thomas (ILWU), Hal Carlstad, Cynthia Johnson" was inadvertently left off the candidate statement of Dave Welsh in the Local Station Board Election booklet.

David Welsh PhotoKPFA and Pacifica are a priceless resource. We have the opportunity to be a force for change -- by amplifying the voices of the millions whose needs and desires, whose opinions and culture are overlooked or silenced by the mainstream media.

As a member of the board I will fight for this perspective.

We have to build on the good programs being done now.

  • More community programming, produced in collaboration with grassroots community groups -- tight, imaginative programs.
  • More on-the-scene news reporting - for national and international as well as local news.
  • Develop news sources that include the viewpoints of people's movements and communities -- rather than relying on wire service copy which, particularly on international stories, often reflects a US government line or pro-business bias. We do not need to be a second NPR.
  • More innovation in music and cultural programming.

My background:
Journalism - Reporter, Senior Editor of Ramparts Magazine, 1964-68; investigative reporting from S.E.Asia, Selma, Delano, Hazard (Ky.), Dallas (JFK assassination). Writer for Detroit News...UPI in Tokyo...Agence France Presse in Paris. Radio reporter for Civil Rights News Network, Mississippi '64...ABC Radio, Algeria '65...WBAI covering '64 Democratic Convention [Miss. Freedom Democratic Party challenge]. Edited Soul on Ice, the prison writings of Eldridge Cleaver. Advanced International Reporting Fellowship, Columbia University.

Labor - Current delegate, SF Labor Council. Postal carrier and longtime executive VP of SF Letter Carriers Union, Local 214. Founding delegate, US Labor Against the War. Steering committee, Labor for Peace & Justice.

Organizations - Participated in five Pastors for Peace caravans breaking the blockade of Cuba. Veterans for Peace. Sing with Freedom Song Network (22 yr). Activist with Haiti Action Committee since 1991, including five investigative/solidarity trips to Haiti.

Commitment to KPFA - During 1999 lockout at KPFA, I was in the street in front of the station or guarding the transmitter on all but two days of the three-week-long confrontation. Physically defending KPFA, by hundreds of people, was key to the effort to prevent the takeover of Pacifica by anti-democratic forces.

At a time when people all over the world are rising up against injustice, we need to ensure that KPFA and Pacifica are strongly committed to amplifying the voices of these communities in struggle. I ask for your vote for Local Station Board.

Endorsed by Pierre Labossiere; Carolyn Scarr; Clarence Thomas, ILWU; Hal Carlstad; Cynthia Johnson.

1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?

KPFA and Pacifica are a priceless resource -- which must be protected and nurtured at this dangerous time. The mainstream media shuts out the viewpoints of working people and communities -- KPFA must be their voice. I will fight for this.

2. How do you envision the Local Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFA and the community?

The Local Board should set the programming policies for KPFA, ensure that the community is actively involved, and help set the direction for Pacifica as a people's network.

3. How could the station better serve its listeners?

a. More community programming [such as the fight against people-removing redevelopment in the Bayview and New Orleans...the campaign against toxic waste from Richmond, CA to Nevada...youth speakouts and organizing...the tremendous mass movements of Latino immigrants...] We have to build on the good programs being done now.

b. More on-the-scene news reporting - for national and international as well as local news.

c. Develop news sources that include the viewpoints of people's movements and communities -- rather than relying on wire service copy which, particularly on international stories, often reflects a US government line or pro-business bias. We do not need to be a second NPR!

d. Innovative approaches to music and cultural programming.

4. Actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?

I agree with Regina Carey that the question should be rephrased -- we should be about increasing the influence of these communities in the station - so that KPFA truly becomes a voice for each community. That's how the listener base can grow and change. As Davey D says on KPFA: "Are you ready for this?"

5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFA should solicit?

Organize caravans bringing music, speakers, agitprop skits and poetry - on a flatbed truck - to different neighborhoods and towns in the areas reached by the KPFA signal. These traveling shows could raise money, but more importantly reach out to new listeners, expose them to liberating ideas and win them to KPFA -- broadening our listener base and our financial base of support.

6. The skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the LSB.

a. Journalism - Reporter, Senior Editor of Ramparts Magazine, 1964-68; investigative reporting from S.E. Asia, Selma, Kentucky coal miners, Kennedy assassination from Dallas. Writer for Detroit News...UPI in Tokyo...Agence France Presse in Paris. Radio reporter for Civil Rights News Network, Mississippi '64...ABC Radio, Algeria '65...WBAI covering '64 Democratic Convention, Atlantic City [Miss. Freedom Democratic Party challenge]. Edited Soul on Ice, the prison writings of Eldridge Cleaver. Advanced International Reporting Fellowship, Columbia University.

b. Labor - Current delegate, San Francisco Labor Council. Postal carrier and longtime executive VP of San Francisco Letter Carriers Union Local 214. Founding delegate, US Labor Against the War. Steering committee, Labor Committee for Peace & Justice.

c. Organizations - Participated in six Pastors for Peace caravans to Cuba. Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival (20 yr). Member, Veterans for Peace. Sing with Freedom Song Network (22 yr). Activist with Haiti Action Committee since 1991, including five investigative trips to Haiti.

d. Commitment to KPFA - During 1999 lockout at KPFA, I was in the street in front of the station or guarding the transmitter on all but two days of the three-week-long confrontation. This was a key part of the struggle to prevent the takeover of Pacifica by anti-democratic forces.

7. Do you anticipate missing LSB meetings due to family, job or transport problems?

No.

8. LSB committees interested in actively serving.

Programming committee.
