My experience as a civil rights activist, since going to Montgomery in December 1955, tells me that slates, "sides" and "he said/she said" rhetoric, does nothing to heal our differences, and lack of respect. I promise to use my political, non-profit, mediation and activist skills to develop solutions that will strengthen and unite the LSB toward problem solving and better communication on behalf of KPFA. Lew Hill, Pacifica's founder, went to jail rather than participate in World War II. Many, who didn't live through that, questioned his dedication. I know my years of trying to end the Vietnam War prepared me to give all I have to save all the lives I can by resisting George Bush's illegal wars, including my recent 46 day fast to "bring the troops home". A wheelchair user since 1977, I have been actively involved in barrier removal. I will continue this fight until people with disabilities can fully participate as equal partners in our society. Rank me number one. Our job as members is far from done. 1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board? I want to be on the Local Station Board as an incumbent and original listener since 1949, to try to bring some civility, sense of history and encourage a meeting of minds on a very diverse board. 2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFA and the community? The Local Station Board needs to exercise the powers it does have under our flawed bylaws; to demand more transparency at all levels and improve relations with the Pacifica Foundation board and staff. I believe the community and our supporters are impatiently waiting for the light to shine through. 3. How could the station better serve its listeners? One way in which KPFA can immediately better serve you our listener/supporters by encouraging you to join station board committees and helping us make sure that all aspects of station and network operations including finances and programming decisions are open to you and those you elect to represent you. 4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience? To increase the influence of the station in under-represented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience are two separate needs. Increasing audience diversity will require more programming focused on those who are presently not listening because they do not hear programming that is relevant to them. That new programming needs much on and off the air promotion for potential listeners to know of its existence with opportunities to both play critic and producer with training. The station influence issue has several points begging with the ability to hear our signal. We dropped the ball when we let KQED acquire a station that would have made KPFA listening possible in the Sacramento area. Now we must find other ways to increase the listening opportunities before we can discuss station influence. The solutions must be affordable to the majority of potential listeners. 5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFA should solicit? KPFA should remain listener supported with limited support from private non-profit foundations for special projects and programs only. I do not support receipt of government funds including from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, whos rules are behind the present attempt to increase the already oversized Pacifica National Board with an unwise (and defeated by KPFA LSB bylaws change). We must rethink the ways we presently raise funds from our listeners and include you in the planning decisions. 6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board. I have spent a lifetime listening to KPFA and was raised by two politically active parents. I have degrees in criminal justice administration and theology. I have worked in political campaigns and social change non-profits. I have served on non-profit boards including KPFA and chaired several. My paid work history ended while I was in graduate school and I too the sage advice of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to "stay on the bottom and organize". I have done my best to follow his advice to be another voice of the voiceless. I am a faith based activist working through my local congregation and a Grey Panther coordinator. I have the needed skills to be re-elected to the KPFA local station board and will continue to listen to you and others in making my voting decisions as an independent listener representative. 7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation? Neither family nor job obligations should inhibit my attendance at meetings. My wheelchair lift-equipped van that requires a driver is presently in the hands of the United States Department of Homeland Security for several bogus reasons. My favorite pictures advertising an upcoming event are on the van's windows. The pictures are of dead and injured children in the Middle East thanks to our war machine which must be stopped. My present attendance record would have been better were I not an add-on due to a resignation after time commitment had already been confirmed. 8. On which Local Station Board committees* are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve? I presently serve on the KPFA Finance, Fundraising, and outreach LSB committees as well as the Pacifica National Board Archives Committee where my heart is because the Pacifica Archives are our collective crown jewel, and suffering terribly from benign or not so benign neglect. The collection must be preserved. It's our collective obligation to do so for future generations. If we don't know our past-how can we appropriately plan for our future? If reelected, I will give my all to save KPFA and Pacifica in a fair and legal manner to serve our listeners and provide points of view the corporate media refuse to share! |
