Tina Flores

My name is Tina Flores and I am running to be a member of the KPFA Local Station Board.

I was active in the movement to save KPFA in 1999, and I want to use my lifetime of advocacy work to help KPFA voice our community needs and assist in performing our share to alleviate global problems.

My activism began when I was 13 years old as I began my involvement with the United Farm Workers (UFW), I worked closely with Cesar Chavez, embracing his vision for migrant workers, and continue my work through the Cesar E. Chavez Lifetime Achievement Awards Committee. Being the coordinator of this yearly event is my favorite privilege as our Committee recognizes individuals that transform our communities and are recognized by their fellow organizers.

Today, I also work on Oakland's sister city relationship with Santiago De Cuba. Every year our group does educational outreach on current U.S. public policy toward Cuba. We inform our community on the unbalanced information which is promoted and funded by current White House corruption.

I am also the founding president of Quality Medical Relief, a worldwide volunteer medical relief group. We deliver medical equipment and medicines, free, to hospitals, clinics, and doctors throughout the world each year. These medical facilities offer free medical treatment in rural areas. I have been incredibly enriched by my travels and I bring my experience, enthusiasm and excitement for everything back to KPFA to share after every trip!

I have staffed the Congressional campaigns of Barbara Lee and Ronald Dellums.

As a respected Latina activist, I will keep KPFA connected to Latin American activism and the community of the East Bay. Together we can change the world!

I'm proud to be endorsed by U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, as well as the many community leaders listed at www.kpfalisteners.org.

Sincerely,

Tina Flores

1. Why do you want to be on the LSB?

KPFA is a listener supported station, not a media conglomerate. KPFA gives the opportunity to many writers, producers and the potential is greater here at KPFA for minorities than anywhere else in the media world. I am passionate about doing outreach to our immigrant and working class communities.

2. How do you envision the LSB working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFA and the community?

I think the LSB should reach out to the underserved communities we represent, to better connect them to KPFA.

3. How could the station better serve its listeners?

We serve the listeners better by reaching further into our community.

4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience.

This is a small example of what I think we could develop for new listeners. Cuban music directly from Cuba but pre-recorded can be aired without breaking any laws. This is an opportunity to show how some laws are unfair (we can trade with this country but we can't visit or hear music).

5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFA should solicit?

There are more philanthropic family organizations here in the Bay Area that want to donate to alternative projects and want to fund projects that benefit more underserved and under-reported areas, for example: world relief, global warming projects, fuel alternatives and political awareness campaigns.

6. Please state your skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.

I am responsible, I am self-reliant, I learned to organize from Cesar E. Chavez. I can say that the community respects me and many of my peers have relied on my leadership skills to be a coordinator for many events. I received my Master of Arts in Humanities from New College of California-San Francisco. I also run an organization that supports doctors around the world that offer free medical care in rural areas.

7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation?

No, I do not anticipate any conflicts in my schedule.

8. On which LSB committees are you interested in actively serving?

The committee that I would like to actively serve on is the Programming and Outreach committees. This is a great opportunity to inform our listeners of Federal court cases of unfairness like The Cuban 5 that the news media won't give coverage to any lead stories.
