Steve Conley Candidate Statement

When I completed my term as LSB rep in 2004 I returned to community work including Berkeley in establishing (40) groups and social networks such as Disabled Berkeley seniors. In Oakland developing Artist Land Trust condo housing at the old Oakland Noodle Factory, working as a leader in the progressive community in SF, elected board member to Community Benefits District responsible for real community work in making the streets cleaner, safer as well as building alliances and coalitions between groups and diverse communities. In 2002 as the producer of the TL Summit Live Radio Town hall, Septemeber 26th was declared TL Summit day by District Six and the Supervisors. In 2004 KPFA was recognized by SF Supervisors for its broadcast of TL Summit II which again represented real issues affecting the homeless, seniors, housing, health care, workers union and non-union. The real winners are those groups who continue to work in coalition together.

Currently KPFA is in a regressive state, while we have outstanding programmers, staff union and non union we have a serious problem by a few who have circumvented transparency, fair hiring practices and old school control tendencies for a series of interim appointments which has had a corrosive affects on the legitimacy of the hiring of out senior positions. If elected I will work to get rid of this interim self selecting hiring practice, disallow any interim appointment ability to apply thereby making sure such appointments are just that temporary and re-establish a fair and honest hiring process with public ability to Q&A final candidates for General Manager and Program Director. I also think that anyone who has lawsuits pending against Pacifica shouldn't be applying/holding senior positions due to conflict of interest.

Two Hearts One Mind: Currently our LSB suffers from two distinctions, those who see things from a staff POV and believe that the boards is a threat to its ability to make decisions for the stations and the other part of teh democracy movement that created a board to reflect ground up listeners full participation in overseeing KPFA. If elected I will work tirelessly to bring these two hearts together as one mind dedicated to the best interest of KPFA.

I reflect those listeners who recognize that we need to seriously get our financial house in order which are serious enough to consider staff cuts or layoffs now rather than more serious considerations in the near future.

I would work for a better labor relationship between management, paid and unpaid staff which currently is unduly strained over managements union definitions and recognitions.

We need a stronger Community Advisor Board representing the community and called for my California law.

More public input and participation in programming including a grid ecology that helps chart program development for the future reflective of our diverse communities.

We need to complete the work on digital licensing and expanding Internet programming,
