KPFT Listener Candidates

Below are the Listener Candidates for the KPFT Local Station Board.

Sandra D Rawline Candidate Statement

I’m Sandra D Rawline and I would appreciate your vote. If elected to this term it will be my 5th year to serve as an elected member of the Local Station Board and I am still hopefully optimistic that we will continue to move forward accomplishing our goals along the way.

David Salerno Candidate Statement

As a first time candidate for the LSB at KPFT, I would like to offer my vast experience in political activism and support I've had in mega-events like the White Party which is a major fundraiser for HIV, and the Winter Party, also a major fundraiser for the GLBT community of Miami-Dade and South Florida. Both of these organizations have brought in donations in amount of tens of millions of dollars as well as millions more in tourism dollars. These organizations that have benefited from these mega-events do not serve exclusively the GLBT community, but rather the whole community at large.

Deb Shafto Candidate Statement

I am a long time peace activist and a pre-kindergarten teacher for many years. I believe that the station is essential in our struggle to create a world that works for everyone with no one left out. I have been an active Green Party member and have served as co-chair and on the steering committee.

C Lee Taylor Candidate Statement

I love KPFT and Pacifica – the station is one of Houston's most valuable assets and one of the best antidotes to corporate media. The hijacking of our public airwaves by corporate media has played a venal and central role in getting us to our present state of endless war, alienation and debt-shackled consumer stupor. Indeed, if our public airwaves were truly used for the public interest (as legally required), KPFT's unique role in Houston would no doubt be less exceptional and would not engender the fevered passion and sense of urgency so many of us have for the station.

Richard Uzzell Candidate Statement

Re-Elect Richard Uzzell

Making It Real… Compared to what?

As I watch our world get crueler and more bazaar, I look around to see where I might apply the little gravity I have. I believe KPFT, a priceless venue for truth and education, can and must become stronger and more effective. I am an enabler. I am a builder. I know the importance of shelter and a voice in a storm, and Folks….. We, are in a storm.

Ted Weisgal Candidate Statement

After three years on the Local Station Board I chose to be on the sidelines this year. Now I, Ted Weisgal, ask you to consider my candidacy for another term on the KPFT LSB.

Doc Bethune Candidate Statement

I am a current member of the LSB and the PNB. I serve on the Outreach Committee and Chair the Anti-Racism Committee and Diversity Committee on the local level and I am a member of the Personnel, Audit, Executive Director Search, and the Committee to Investigate Racism & Sexism. I Believe in KPFT and Pacifica because it is one of the most critical mechanisms for communicating the truth to our community.

Mary Dennis Candidate Statement

My name is Mary Dennis and I am running for re-election to the LSB.

There are many words that can be used in a LSB statement, as there are many words that are associated with the LSB and the LSB meetings. But the simple reality, what it comes down to, is ACTION. We need action and commitment! We need people willing to get involved, roll up their sleeves, and do what needs to be done. We need to move forward with plans and make things happen. Everyone always has a lot of good ideas. We can talk about ideas all day long. It is time to put those ideas into motion. I am ready to move forward.

Melinda Iley-Dohn Candidate Statement

This is an exciting time to be a part of Pacifica as a member of the KPFT LSB as we prepare for our fourth elections. We are growing and there are many needs in the area of outreach to get the Pacifica message out to a broader audience and grow in a rapidly advancing technological radio market.

Esther King Candidate Statement

I have enjoyed and benefited from KPFT’s Programming since 1967. A large part of my social and political consciousness is derived from this long association with that unique source of consistent radio programming over all these years.

Alberto Luera Candidate Statement

I am Alberto Luera. I am a native of South Texas and spent practically all of my life on the Texas Mexican border. Ethnically, I am deemed a Mexican American. Culturally and politically, I am a Chicano. Since my graduation from college in 1969, I have spent all of my professional life in the non profit sector with an emphasis in social service, advocacy activities, community development, economic empowerment and political education. My career spanned 36 years and took me throughout Texas, the Southwestern and Southeastern U. S. I retired in 2005 and am visually disabled with 98 percent vision loss. During my 36 years of active community work, I was involved in all faces of non profit work including being a staff member, a program planner, and was an executive director for 24 years. I also served in various board of director capacities including board member, secretary, treasurer and chairman for various non profit corporations that I was involved with.
